J.Scheil:
I dont know the circumstances of the replaced cowlings, and that would be
interesting, as i found a 8x11 of this ship when this paint was new...
Another Mclellan mustang and surplused as N5414V and then sold to Richard
Weaver of Van Nuys CA as N713DW racing as #6 and #15. She was sold in 1970
to T neal of pasadena then to Anthony D'Allesandris of Reno NV where she had
4 registrations. N22DC, 72, N51T 77, N51TZ and then N5415V second
allocation. I think there was a crash and parts were being moved around as
45-11571 N5415V and N51T was also parts? and owned by Tony D'A. In any case
an aircraft was rebuilt from the two and became 511553 and was raced as Miss
Fit by Erin Reinschild. Sold and restored she is today the Jacky C, and is a
great looking stock P-51D!
William D. Yoak:
This Mustang was owned and raced by Dick Weaver in 1965 and '66.The aircraft
was based out of Vannuys, but I do not know the present status or about who
the present owner might be. I think Weaver sold it in the mid to late 60's.
T.J. Johansen:
Case #109 This is 45-11553 which at the time was owned by Dick Weaver who was
head instructor for Valley Pilots at Van Nuys. The plane was also used for air
racing a couple of times with a Zeuschel Merlin up front. I´ve been told that
Weaver later went to Vietnam and was shot down as one of the last pilots (If not
the last!) of that war! If I´m not wrong the plane is still owned by Jeff Clyman
in 78th FG colors as "Jacky C"
Bill Eaton:
By the way, the photos were taken at Reno, probably '71 or thereabouts.
N713DW had been raced in the 1966-68 period with a Bearcat propeller
previous to getting the "K" prop shown in the photo(s). Perhaps N713DW
suffered some problem running the Bearcat prop (as Cliff Cummins did
with #69/N79111 at Reno '70) and had a mishap that required a new prop
and cowls?
Case Closed!
