Mark Huismann: Case #111 shows a red, black and white P-51D with a silver spinner and paddle blade Hamilton Standard prop. The aircraft in question is N5471V, and at the time it was owned by my late father, Jack Huismann. My father owned this aircraft from 1967 to 1974, and in 1971 said aircraft was repainted to match the mount of Maj. Wm. Shomo, Pacific Theater of Operations, "The Flying Undertaker". The aircraft was a familiar sight to those in the early days of Oshkosh. While Dad owned this aircraft, it was flown in airshows by both Bob Hoover and Paul Poberezny. I was a lucky kid. Case Closed!!!


Dick Phillips: The closer of the two white/red mustangs is N5471V and the further one is N351D.

I have several color photos of each of these two and they clearly show that 5471V had the black anti-glare on the cowl and the bare metal spinner, while 351D had the white spinner and no anti-glare panel. 71V had a single wide red stripe on the vertical and 51d had two narrower red stripes on the vertical. My guess is that Cavalier did both paint schemes, with some changes from the customers.
